    Risk to general public in Illinois remains low

    CHICAGO – The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH), Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH), and Cook County Department of Public Health (CCDPH), along with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), are reporting the second confirmed case of 2019 novel coronavirus (2019-nCov) in Illinois.  The individual is a man in his 60s and is the spouse of the first confirmed travel-related case in Illinois.  He had not traveled overseas but interacted with his wife upon her return from China. This is the first person-to-person spread of the virus in the United States.

    SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) today announced the 2019 Fourth Quarterly Report of Nursing Home Violators is now posted on IDPH’s website.  The report contains additional information about the violations.

    The facilities listed below were cited with type “AA” or “A” violations of the Nursing Home Care Act and processed between October-December 2019. An “AA” violation is cited when there is a condition or occurrence at the facility that proximately caused a resident’s death. An “A” violation pertains to a condition in which there is a substantial probability that death or serious mental or physical harm will result, or has resulted.

    Patient is the second of two nationally diagnosed cases, officials note small risk to the general public.

    CHICAGO – The Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) today joined state and federal health officials as well as other City departments in reporting the first local resident with a confirmed case of 2019 novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV). Health officials reassured the general public that the risk of the virus spreading still remains low. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) first confirmed Friday morning the second case of coronavirus in the United States. The patient recently returned to Chicago from Wuhan, China, where an outbreak of pneumonia caused by the virus has been ongoing since December 2019.

    SPRINGFIELD - The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) and the Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) are investigating cases of Legionnaires’ disease at two separate nursing homes in Chicago. Two residents at Balmoral Nursing Home and one resident at Admiral at the Lake have been diagnosed with Legionnaires’ disease. The cases at the two facilities do not appear to be related. Residents at each of the nursing homes were at the facility for the entire 10 days before they started showing symptoms, also known as the exposure period.

    Balmoral Nursing Home has implemented water restrictions and installed water filters in certain areas of the facility. IDPH has collected water samples for testing and is awaiting results. Water samples collected by the facility and tested by its consultant were negative for Legionella bacteria. The facility has provided...
