    28 grantees will place 1,682 AmeriCorps volunteers in communities

    SPRINGFIELD – The Serve Illinois Commission on Volunteerism and Community Service today announced $8.6 million in Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) federal grants to enable 1,682 volunteers in 28 AmeriCorps programs to better serve Illinois communities. An additional $7 million is available for college education awards.

    “AmeriCorps members make a powerful impact on the toughest challenges facing our nation,” said CNCS CEO Wendy Spencer. “Building on Illinois’s strong tradition of neighbor-helping-neighbor, AmeriCorps members will improve lives and strengthen communities across the state. As they serve others, AmeriCorps members will also expand opportunities for themselves - gaining skills and experience to jumpstart their careers.”

    SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) and the Adams County Health Department (ACHD) are reporting four confirmed cases of Legionnaires’ disease, including one death in Quincy.  At this time there is no evidence they are connected to the Illinois Veterans’ Home-Quincy.
     
    “As part of our investigation of the Legionnaires’ disease outbreak at the Illinois Veterans’ Home-Quincy, we asked our local health care providers to help us with surveillance of the disease and test individuals in the community who have symptoms related to Legionnaires’ disease,” said ACHD Administrator Jerrod Welch.  “We have thoroughly investigated each confirmed case for a connection with the outbreak, as well as any possible connection to one another.  At this time, we have found no connections.”

    SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) has confirmed the first two human West Nile virus related deaths in Illinois for 2015.  The Cook County Department of Public Health reported a resident in their 90’s became ill at the end of August and has died.  Separately, the Kendall County Health Department reported a resident in their 70’s became ill at the end of July and has died.
     
    “Although we’re getting closer to the end of summer, you still can be at risk of getting West Nile virus,” said Illinois Department of Public Health Nirav D. Shah, M.D., J.D.  “It’s important for everyone to continue taking precautions like wearing insect repellent and staying indoors between dusk and dawn.”

    Quincy, IL - The Illinois Department of Veterans’ Affairs (IDVA) and the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) today announced the deaths of a total of seven residents at the Illinois Veterans’ Home-Quincy.  The seven residents, all of whom had underlying medical conditions, were among the 39 individuals who had been diagnosed with Legionnaires’ disease to date.  Test results are currently pending for other residents.

    Quincy, IL - The Illinois Department of Veterans’ Affairs (IDVA) and the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) today announced eight confirmed cases of Legionnaires’ disease in residents at the Illinois Veterans’ Home - Quincy.  There have been no known deaths related to this outbreak.     SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) has confirmed the first human West Nile virus case reported in Illinois for 2015.  The St. Clair County Health Department reported an adolescent female became ill in August.
     
    “The recent hot, dry weather in Illinois has increased the number of mosquitoes carrying West Nile virus,” said Illinois Department of Public Health Nirav D. Shah, M.D., J.D.  “This first human case is a little later in the year than we typically see in Illinois, but it’s a good reminder of the importance for people to continue taking precautions like wearing insect repellent and staying indoors between dusk and dawn.”
