Oral Health Among Youth in Illinois

  • 53% of third graders in Illinois have at least one dental sealant present in a permanent molar
  • 37% of youth in the nation have received dental sealants on one or more of their primary or permanent teeth
  • Healthy People 2030 Target for U.S youth who will receive dental sealants on one or more molars is 42.5%

  • 35.8% of Illinois youth received preventative dental care
  • 14.6% of Illinois youth received dental treatment services
  • 18.2% of Illinois youth received a sealant on a permanent molar

Regular Dental Visits

Only 47% of Illinois youth enrolled in Medicaid/CHIP visited the dentist, that's 5% below youth who visited the dentist nationally

Illinois third graders who drank sugar-sweetened beverages (2x/day) had 6.8% higher rates of caries experience and 1.0% higher rates of untreated caries when compared to the overall survey population
